How it compares#
All three withoutBG models scored on the same 36 photos with ground-truth alpha mattes. Lower is better on every metric. The API model is still slightly more accurate (Enterprise MAE is 2.1% higher), but Enterprise is the only one of the two you run and own yourself, and its MAE is 4.5% lower than the free open-weights model.
| Model | MAE | Edge (MGE) | Connectivity | Runs on | License |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | 0.0313 | 0.0333 | 0.0309 | Your infrastructure | Commercial license |
| API | 0.0307 | 0.0323 | 0.0306 | withoutBG cloud (Frankfurt) | Pay per image |
| Open weights | 0.0328 | 0.0389 | 0.0324 | Your infrastructure | Free, open model license |

When to choose Enterprise#
- Images can't leave your network. Contracts, regulation or internal policy rule out a third-party API. Enterprise runs inside your own infrastructure.
- You need more than the open-weights model. The open-weights model is free to self-host; Enterprise is the stronger model for the same setup.
- You want to own it. The model runs on your servers, next to your storage and pipelines, with no dependency on a third-party service.
If you'd rather not run infrastructure, the API model is slightly more accurate and fully managed.
